Your Guide to Wisconsin's Best Snowshoe Trails

The snow has (finally!) fallen and winter seems to be in full swing here in Wisconsin. For some that means hunkering down with a blanket and some warm socks, avoiding the outdoors at all costs. But come on, where’s the fun in that?

We don’t have to tell you Wisconsin is a beautiful state...every local knows that. But the winter (although downright frigid at times) can be just as fun as the summertime! You just need to know what to do, and where, to take full advantage of a bright Wisconsin winter day.

So, where to start...how about snowshoeing!?

Snowshoeing is a popular and growing sport in our great state. It’s accessible, safe and fun for any skill level. And that’s not to mention that it’s an awesome workout. Just get yourself a pair of snowshoes at your local sporting goods store or rent a set, and if there’s snow on the ground, you’re ready to go!

Most trails in Wisconsin are open for snowshoeing this time of year. Just be aware of trails marked and groomed for other uses, like snowmobiling. Sticking to running and hiking trails is a safe bet!

While there are TONS of beautiful trails all around Wisconsin, we’ve gathered a few particularly special gems for you to check out this season. These locales are as scenic as they are tranquil, and we have a feeling you’ll have a newfound love of winter after trekking down any one of these paths.

Follow this 2.3 mile trail along the lake and through the bluffs

Navarino Wildlife Area – north of Shiocton, WI

Kettle Moraine State Forest – near Eagle, WI

Each trail contains sections ranging from easy to difficult...these trails will keep you on your toes while you get a great workout!

Peninsula State Park – Fish Creek, WI

4 miles of trails wrap around the interior of this park located on Lake Michigan – trails range from moderate to difficult; the best part? Leashed pets are welcome!

Lakeshore State Park – Bayfield, WI

Explore the sea caves of the Apostle Islands on foot – when the ice conditions are safe, you can trek along the shoreline of Lake Superior to reach the caves; if snowshoeing on ice isn’t for you, the Lakeshore Trail is nearby with spectacular views of its own

Enjoy the scenery, enjoy Wisconsin, and don’t forget to enjoy a tasty Northern Oasis Spirits cocktail when you get in from a day on the trails. In fact, we’d argue that packing a bottle or two of your favorite Northern Oasis Spirit is just as important as packing your snowshoes!

It doesn’t matter if you opt for a Lakeview Vodka and seltzer, a Shorewood Whiskey Old Fashioned, a Riverbank Refresher or a shot of Lone Duck Cinnamon Whiskey...our locally crafted spirits are sure to warm you up and rejuvenate your soul.
