The Wisconsin Hygge Lifestyle
You might have heard the word Hygge (pronounced “hue-guh”) once or twice over the past few winter months. And, if you’re like us, you’ve wondered what it is and why people seem to be so enthralled with this strange yet inviting term.
So what is “Hygge”? Why is it so great? How can you incorporate it into your life?
Hygge is a Danish concept of calm contentment. There’s no direct English translation, but it’s often associated with a feeling of coziness and a total lack of emotional stress. Basically, it’s the feeling you have while sitting on the couch in your warmest sweatshirt, wrapped in your fuzziest blanket, sipping a tasty cocktail with your favorite people while snow lightly falls outside.
Comfortable, calm, content...that’s hygge!
Sounds pretty great, right? Enjoying the little things in life and regularly practicing hygge help Danes stay happy year-round, despite their long, frigid winters. Sound familiar? Here in Wisconsin, we know all about frigid winters. But we could all benefit from a little more hygge!
So, how can you practice hygge to boost your mood all winter long? Here’s a few easy ways to help you feel cozy and calm, no matter the weather:
Comfortable Clothing
Yoga pants, old hoodie, and slippers? Yes please!
Soften your Space
Light your favorite candle, grab some blankets, dim the lights, and treat yourself to a big new pillow you can curl up with
Practice Togetherness
Make a point to spend time with the people you love. If someone can’t make it, FaceTime them so they can join the group! There’s nothing like good company to make you feel warm inside.
Enjoy the Simple Things
Read a good book, start a journal, add a few succulents to your indoor space
Comfort Foods & Warm Drinks
Allow yourself to indulge in tasty, homemade treats and beverages. Warm baked goods and pastries are hygge essentials. Wash them down with warm tea, coffee, or your favorite Northern Oasis Spirits cocktail. A fresh Danish and hot buttered rum made with Riverbank Spiced Rum? Count us in!
There are many ways to practice hygge and make the most of those long cold winters in Wisconsin, but this list should help you get started.
So if you're a little too stressed, and it's a little too chilly out, take some time to slow down, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. A cozy blanket and some Northern Oasis Spirits are a great way to start bringing more simplicity and tranquility into your life!
