The Wisconsin Way on How to Rim Your Cocktail Glass

A properly-rimmed cocktail glass is more than just aesthetically pleasing – it's part of the flavor experience. Learn how to do it like the pros!

Different cocktails call for different types of rims. So, let’s talk about a few of the different styles out there:

Salt Rims:

If you want a salt rim, reach for either kosher or sea salt. Table salt makes for a poor salt rim, as the iodide and other additives give the rim too much of a salty flavor. You can also look for pink or black salt to add visual flair.

Sugar Rims:

If salt isn’t what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with a sugar rim for your next cocktail. But beware of brown sugar - it’s great for baking but dissolves too easily in liquid to be very helpful on a rim. Just like salt, there are quite a few varieties, including coarse baking sugar which makes a striking rim, especially if you get colored baking sugar!

Dessert Rims:

In the mood for a dessert drink? Use cookie crumbs or sprinkles to jazz up your glass. Get creative – if it can stick to frosting, it can stick to your rim. Remember, if the particles are small enough, you can use ‘em to rim a glass!

Now let’s talk about how to make this all work:

  1. Pour salt, sugar or the dessert flavor of your choice onto a small plate, or into a shallow bowl. Shake it gently to level it, so that it forms an even layer.

  2. Hold either a lemon or lime wedge in one hand with your glass in the other. Using a lemon or lime, wet the top and outer lip of the glass.

  3. Choose your rim type:

    a. For a balanced rim, gently set your glass top down in the rim ingredient.

    b. For the outer rim, hold the glass sideways and carefully roll the ingredients onto the outside of the glass.

  4. Tap the glass gently to dislodge any excess flavor.

  5. Add your cocktail and enjoy!

We hope that the next time you whip up a cocktail you also try to jazz it up with a simple (or complex) rim of your glass. From salt to sugar to dessert rims, the possibilities are honestly endless. So, grab our spirits and start creating the best cocktail rimming idea!
