Memorial Day

Memorial Day

When we say, “Happy Memorial Day,” it’s a bittersweet sort of happy. Since Memorial Day honors the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military, many families have been affected by that loss. Memorial Day itself, however, is a celebration of those brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the rest of us.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Sure, there are plenty of cookouts and family gatherings, but many Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials and taking part in parades to honor the memory of those we’ve lost. It is also the unofficial mark of the beginning of the summer season.

And while you host your backyard BBQ this holiday season keep in mind that, “Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” - Unknown.

So, enjoy the freedom we have been given with friends and family, while we thank our Veterans for their courage and strength, and kick off the start of summer with these two tasty recipes created by our friend Corinn L!

Lone Duck Cinnamon Whiskey BBQ
6 oz. tomato paste
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp. vinegar
¾ cup Lone Duck Cinnamon Whiskey
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. pepper
Whisk together and serve over your favorite grilled meat or on the side as a dipping sauce.

Riverbank Spiced Rum Dip
8 oz. cream cheese - room temperature
¼ cup powdered sugar
1 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
½ cup Riverbank Spiced Rum
In a stand mixer, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add the milk and vanilla and continue to mix at a low speed, slowly adding the powdered sugar. Once all ingredients are mixed, add the Northern Oasis Riverbank Spiced Rum and mix smoothly. (Will take about 3 minutes for mixture to fluff.)
Chill for 30 minutes to an hour. Serve with your choice of fruit, vanilla wafers, on top of a cake or in your favorite hot drink!

*This is a HARD recipe, meaning the alcohol is not cooked out. Enjoy responsibly! *

Do you have a family tradition for the kickoff to the summer season? Whether you spend time with family and friends, decorate our fallen soldiers' graves, or take part in your local community's Memorial Day Parade, let us know how you prefer to spend your Memorial Day! We want to hear about it! But always remember, Celebrate Life Responsibly!!

In honor of those who fought for our freedom until their dying breath, we remember and thank them on this Memorial Day.
